Why Choose a Workshop-Based Service for Your Motorhome or Caravan Over a Mobile One?

When your caravan or motorhome is due for a service or habitation check, having a mobile engineer come to your driveway sounds ideal. After all, you barely need to lift a finger.

However, there is a catch. And more than one. Having done this for a long time at our NCC Approved Workshop, we’d always recommend bringing the vehicle to us for anything beyond a basic check.

The quality of the work you get from a properly equipped workshop is, in our experience, noticeably better. Here’s why.

What a Workshop Gives You That a Driveway Can’t

A mobile engineer brings a standard set of tools that fit in a van. A workshop has everything to hand: proper ramps for underside access, calibrated gas-testing equipment, mains and professional electrical rigs along with a myriad of specialist tools.

A full habitation check needs to be right for several reasons that affect your caravan or motorhome’s performance and longevity. Water ingress testing is a good example. Accurate moisture readings rely on controlled conditions and a proper meter.

Working Around Your Caravan or Motorhome

Inspecting the chassis, underfloor, brake components, underslung tanks and pipework properly requires raising the vehicle on ramps. A mobile engineer on a driveway has limited access, making a thorough underside inspection tricky.

The same goes for the roof. Seals, skylights, ventilation units and any roof-mounted accessories are far easier to inspect properly with the right access equipment than from the top of a ladder on uneven ground.

Time to Do the Job Properly

Mobile engineers typically run multiple appointments in a day, with travel between each one.

That’s the nature of the model, and it can mean less time is available for the finer details of each job.

If something unexpected turns up mid-check, such as a deteriorating fitting, a seal that needs attention or a damp reading worth investigating further, it often needs to be noted for another visit rather than dealt with there and then.

In a workshop, the vehicle receives all the checks it should within the necessary timeframe.

And What If You Need Repairs?

This isn’t a box-ticking exercise. Small repairs or recommendations are what give your vehicle longevity and keep it comfortable for you.

Our Ringwood workshop carries a full spectrum of spares and replacements. A mobile engineer who finds a worn component mid-service usually has to order the part and arrange a return trip. This means a second appointment, more time off and a delay if the part isn’t readily available.

We often see vehicles that come to us following one of these checks needing further work. In many cases, it would have been quicker β€” and more cost-effective β€” to start with us.

What We Offer at Our Ringwood Workshop

Habitation checks and annual servicing are the bread and butter, but the workshop covers a lot more than that. Here’s the full range:

● Habitation checks and servicing: annual safety and condition inspections
● Underslung LPG vapour tank installations: frees up locker space and gives you cheaper gas on the road
● Automatic HPC levelling systems: level your vehicle in under 90 seconds
● Gas and heating installations: heaters, water heating and gas storage systems
● Electrical installations and repairs: fault finding, upgrades and conversion support
● Solar panels and air conditioning: power and climate, fitted and serviced
● Truma diagnostics and repairs: official fault diagnosis and repair
● Appliance repairs: fridges, heaters, water systems and windows
● Damp and water ingress reports: catch and treat problems early
● Tyres and brakes: replacement, balancing and safety checks
● Semi-air suspension: better handling, ride and payload

Every one of these benefits from being carried out in a fully equipped workshop rather than on a driveway.
